In today’s Hollywood, we have hundreds upon hundreds of millionaires who take the money and run, rarely devoting themselves in any meaningful way to giving back to the business that made them such a huge success. The problem, as I’ve learned, is that the Motion Picture Fund now has a yearly shortfall of $20 million, roughly half of that coming from the hospital and long-term care unit. With the hospital deficit widening each year, the fund’s leadership decided to shed itself of its biggest money-loser in the hopes of saving the overall fund, which spends roughly $120 million a year on various healthcare services.

The native Angeleno landed her first industry job at the age of 16, working the late shift with MGM Studios. She worked with Kramer on more than two dozen films and “counted luminaries such as Sidney Poitier, Bobby Darin and Vivien Leigh among her friends,” according to the Motion Picture home. They were all skilled nursing residents between the ages of 64 and 99. The founders of the fund, some of film's greatest early stars, decided to create some stability. In 1921, they formed a fund so working industry folks could make contributions to those without work.

There was a turbulent period starting in early 2009 when the MPTF announced that rising costs amid the recession would force it to shutter its long-term care unit, which had 136 patients at the time, as well as its acute-care hospital. We are devoted to the highest level of health and happiness for all our residents.
The 14th annual "Night Before" party, held February 27, 2016, raised a total of $5.2 million to benefit the MPTF. More than $70 million has been raised since the event was launched.
